Odisha is the ninth largest state by area in India, and the eleventh largest by population. Odia is the official language. A stretched coastline of about 500 km long, adds to the tourist delights. The major cities of Orissa are Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Cuttack, Balasore, Sambalpur and Rourkela. The interior of the state is mountainous and sparsely populated. The richness of the Culture of a region can be visualized from the sculptures and monuments of the past.

History

The History of Orissa spans over 3,500 years and it is a typical from the history of the northern plains in many ways. The word Oriya is an anglicized version of Odia which itself is a modern name for the Odra or Udra tribes that inhabited the central belt of modern Orissa. Orissa has been the home of the Kalinga, Utkal, Kantara/Mahakantara and Kosal (South) that played a particularly prominent role in the region's history and one of the earliest references to the ancient Kalinga appears in the writings of Vedic records.

People

Odisha has a diverse culture with different customs across eastern, western, northern and southern parts. The local lingo differs from one region to the other, thus adding to the cultural diversity and richness of the state.

Geography

Odisha has five major regions; the Odisha Coastal Plain in the east, the Middle Mountainous and Highland Region, the Central plateaus, the western rolling uplands and the major flood plains.Odisha coastal plain also known as the Utkal plain is the combination of several deltas of varied sizes and shapes formed by the major rivers of Odisha, such as the Subarnarekha, the Budhabalanga, the Baitarani, the Brahmani, the Mahanadi, and the Rushikulya. Middle Mountainous and Highland Region covers almost 3/4th of the entire state and is mostly occupied by the hills and the mountains of Eastern Ghats which rise abruptly and steeply in the east and slope gently to a dissected plateau in the west running from north-west (Mayurbhanj) to south-west (Malkangiri). The Central Plateaus are mostly eroded plateaus forming the western slopes of the Eastern Ghats while the western rolling uplands are lower in elevation.

Odisha has a pleasant and equable climate throughout the year. Odisha is a tropical land with the coast running down its entire length. Monsoon can be witnessed from June-September followed by winters from October-January and summer April-June majorly experienced here.
