Kar Clinic IVF Center, Bhubaneswar announces the birth of the first laser assisted hatching ICSI pregnancy of Odisha. We have started laser assisted hatching in our center since last 1year.We have achieved pregnancies in many older women using this technique previously, but this is our first live birth and first in Odisha after laser assisted hatching.
Assisted hatching is a procedure in which the zona(shell) of the embryo is opened using the technique of micro manipulation. This facilitates its hatching in the uterus and improves implantation and pregnancy rates. Pregnancy rates rises upto 70% with this technique.
Previously chemical method was used for assisted hatching, with often detrimental results. Now a days to enhance the pregnancy rates, the laser technology is used for assisted embryo hatching. In this technique, the diode laser beam is focused over the zona, so as to thin out "The Zona" at a point generally ¼ of the embryo circumference (10-20 microns) in order to facilitate embryo hatching. The entire procedure is completed in a few milliseconds. Laser assisted hatching is particularly useful for older women (more than 35 years),with oocytes showing a thick zona and women who have had previous failed IVF/ICSI attempts.
We used this technique in a 36 year old lady with 4 prior failed attempts to achieve pregnancy by ICSI done elsewhere.
We used our laser assisted hatching for her and she got pregnant. She had an uneventful antenatal period. She delivered a male child weighing 2.5 kilos on 28th June 2011.
The laser technique can also be used for sperm tail cutting to immobilize it before ICSI procedure. It is also used to make an opening in the ZONA through which a single cell is aspirated at the time of pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis.
Laser Assisted Hatching is appropriate where female is >35 years of age, previous IVF cycles have failed, female has thickened embryo shells(Zona). Generally, the need for ICSI and laser assisted hatching should be individually evaluated during IVF infertility treatment.
Along with Laser Assisted Hatching, in our IVF center we have most developed IVF treatments like Blastocyst culture, Trigas culture, cryopoceservation of oocytes & embryo, Frozen embryo transfer etc. So patients who have dealt with the failure of IVF cycles elsewhere despite having viable embryos, now have golden opportunity to undergo sophisticated IVF/ICSI using the latest technologies at our center.

Berhampur: The much awaited hatchlings of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles emerged near Rushikulya river mouth off Ganjam coast on Friday.
The process didn’t got delayed as speculated by the wildlife experts delayed due to low temperature and cloudy weather in the area. Thousands of baby turtles started their journey towards the sea.
Around 2.54 lakh Olive Ridley female turtles had laid eggs from March 3 to 5 in the area between Gokharakuda and Kantiagada, one of the famous rookeries for this endangered species. After laying eggs, female turtles returned to the sea. This is one of the nature's rare phenomena where babies grow sans mothers. Besides the forest staff, local volunteers were engaged for the safety of the little turtles before they crawled to the sea.
